4

Arrive at JR Kyoto Station with access to buses, subway, and walking distance to Higashiyama. See our station guide for lockers, food, and bus connections.

Tip: Sit on the right side (facing forward) for mountain views. Peak hours (7:30–9 AM) can be standing-room only but the ride is short.

JR Pass

Covered

1

Go to Shin-Osaka Station — not Osaka Station (they're different). From Namba, take the Midosuji subway to Shin-Osaka (~15 min, ¥280).

2

Buy a ticket or use JR Pass. Non-reserved: ¥1,450. Reserved: ¥2,850. JR Pass holders board any Hikari or Kodama train. Avoid Nozomi (not covered).

3

Board and enjoy. The ride is so short you barely have time to sit down. Arrive at JR Kyoto Station's Shinkansen platforms (2F west side).

When it makes sense: Only worth the premium if you have a JR Pass (free), are connecting from a longer Shinkansen journey, or are genuinely short on time. For most travelers, the ¥580 JR Special Rapid is the better choice.

ICOCA & Transport Cards

What you need to know

An ICOCA card (or any IC card like Suica or PASMO) works on all four routes. Tap in at the gate, tap out at your destination. No need to buy individual tickets.

Buy one at any JR ticket machine for ¥2,000 (¥500 deposit + ¥1,500 balance). iPhone users can set up mobile ICOCA or Suica via Apple Wallet — no physical card needed.

The card also works on buses, subways, and at many convenience stores and vending machines across Japan. For details on getting around once you arrive, see our Kyoto transport guide.
