Arashiyama Tips

Beat the bamboo grove crowds

The bamboo grove is small and extremely popular. Arrive before 7 AM for empty paths. By 9 AM it's packed. Early morning light filtering through the bamboo is magical — and worth the early alarm.

Rent bicycles

Arashiyama is spread out — bicycles let you cover more ground efficiently. Many rental shops near Saga-Arashiyama Station. ¥1,000–1,500 for a full day.

Don't skip the northern temples

Most tourists stop at the main bamboo grove. Continue north to discover peaceful gems like Gio-ji, Jojakko-ji, and the atmospheric Adashino Nenbutsu-ji — stone Buddha statues half-swallowed by moss. Don't miss Tenryu-ji, a UNESCO World Heritage temple whose garden is one of Kyoto's finest. If you have a full day, consider pairing a morning here with an afternoon at Fushimi Inari on the opposite side of the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take the JR San-in Line (Sagano Line) to Saga-Arashiyama Station — just 15 minutes and ¥240. Covered by JR Pass. Alternatively, the Randen tram from Shijo-Omiya offers a nostalgic ride, or you can rent bicycles and cycle there along scenic routes.

Extremely crowded from 9 AM to 5 PM. The grove is small and receives thousands of visitors daily. Arrive before 7 AM for empty paths and magical light. By 10 AM, photography becomes nearly impossible without crowds in every shot.

A focused half-day (4–5 hours) covers the bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji, Togetsukyo Bridge, and one or two additional spots. A full day lets you explore the quieter northern temples (Gio-ji, Jojakko-ji), visit the monkey park, and enjoy a riverside lunch without rushing.

Autumn (mid-November) is the most spectacular, when entire mountainsides blaze with red and gold foliage. Spring cherry blossoms along the river are also stunning. Summer is lush and green but hot. Winter is the quietest season with occasional snow.

Arashiyama works best as a morning-to-early-afternoon visit. Combine it with Gion in the evening — our 2-day itinerary maps this exact route.
